Monzo is the UK’s largest app-only bank with over 10 million customers. It launched in 2015 as a prepaid card and became a fully licensed bank in 2017. In 2026, it offers current accounts, savings Pots, personal loans, business accounts, and paid plans with travel insurance and cashback.
This hub covers everything you need to know about using Monzo day-to-day: limits, Pots, fees, cashback, customer service, and how Monzo’s plans compare.

What Monzo Offers
Free Current Account
The free Monzo account gives you a UK sort code and account number, an instant-notification Visa debit card, and access to Monzo’s core features: Pots, round-ups, bill splitting, and spending analytics. You can open Instant Access savings Pots via partner banks directly in the app.
The free account’s ATM allowance is £400 fee-free every rolling 30 days in the UK and EEA (3% applies above that), or unlimited if Monzo is registered as your main bank account. Outside the EEA, £200/month is fee-free, then 3% applies. Frequent cash users abroad, or those who don’t meet the “main bank” criteria, should consider a paid plan.
Monzo Pots
Pots are one of Monzo’s standout features — named savings envelopes within your account where you can ring-fence money for specific purposes. Pots can:
- Hold money at 0% (basic Pot, just for separation)
- Earn interest (Instant Access Pot via partner banks)
- Lock money until a date you choose (Locked Pot)
- Automatically fill via round-ups or salary sorter

Monzo’s Paid Plans
If you use Monzo heavily, a paid plan can offer meaningful upgrades — higher interest on Pots, unlimited ATM withdrawals, and (on the top plans) built-in travel and phone insurance. Plus and Premium are legacy plans no longer open to new customers; today’s sign-up options are Extra, Perks, and Max.

How Monzo Compares
| Bank | Monthly fee | Current account interest | UK ATM fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monzo (free) | £0 | 0% | £400/30 days free (UK & EEA), then 3% |
| Chase UK | £0 | 5% AER (variable — confirm current rate) | Free |
| Starling | £0 | 0% | Free (unlimited) |
| First Direct | £0 | 0% (confirm current Regular Saver rate) | Free |
For free accounts, Chase UK’s current account interest gives it an edge over standard Monzo on rate alone. But Monzo’s Pots, budgeting tools, and ecosystem are significantly richer — making it the better choice for people who want to actively manage their money.
