Enter an hourly rate and the hours you work to see what it comes to a year, a month and a week, or switch to salary to hourly rate to go the other way. The calculator also tells you whether the hourly rate is at or above the minimum wage for your age.

How the conversion works
Pay a year is the hourly rate times your hours a week times the number of weeks you’re paid for. A salary is normally paid for all 52 weeks of the year, including paid holidays, so 52 is the right figure for most full-time and part-time jobs. Change the paid weeks if you’re only paid for the weeks you work, such as some agency or term-time jobs.
An hourly rate of £15 for 37.5 hours a week is £15 × 37.5 = £562.50 a week. Over 52 weeks that’s £29,250 a year, or £2,437.50 a month.
Going the other way, a £30,000 salary for 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks is 1,950 hours a year, so £30,000 ÷ 1,950 = £15.38 an hour.
Minimum wage rates
These are the hourly rates for 2026/27. They change on 1 April each year.
| Age or status | Minimum hourly rate |
|---|---|
| 21 and over (National Living Wage) | £12.71 |
| 18 to 20 | £10.85 |
| Under 18 | £8.00 |
| Apprentice | £8.00 |
The apprentice rate applies to apprentices aged under 19, and to those aged 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship. After the first year, apprentices aged 19 or over get the minimum wage for their age.
The calculator’s check compares one hourly figure with the rate. For salaried workers, whether pay meets the minimum wage is worked out over each pay period and can depend on things like unpaid overtime and deductions, so see the minimum wage guide if you’re close to the line.

Working hours in a year
A full-time week of 37.5 hours over 52 weeks is 1,950 hours a year, and a 40-hour week is 2,080 hours. Those are the hours your salary pays for, including paid holidays. If you want an hourly rate for the hours you actually work, take your holiday weeks off the 52.
Pay periods
| Paid | Pay days a year | One payment is |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | the yearly pay ÷ 52 |
| Every two weeks (fortnightly, sometimes called bi-weekly) | 26 | the yearly pay ÷ 26 |
| Every four weeks | 13 | the yearly pay ÷ 13 |
| Monthly | 12 | the yearly pay ÷ 12 |
Four-weekly pay gives 13 pay days in most years, so one month usually has two pay days.
Paid a salary or by the hour
A salary is a fixed yearly amount, paid in regular instalments for set hours, with paid holiday included. Hourly pay is a rate for each hour you work, so your pay goes up and down with your hours. The minimum wage applies to both. For salaried hours work it is checked over each pay period against the contracted basic hours, not the hours actually worked, until those basic hours are exceeded. Holiday and overtime rules depend on your contract; see holiday pay and the overtime calculator.
