UK Income Percentile Calculator: Where Does Your Income Rank?

See where your total income ranks among UK taxpayers, before or after tax, using HMRC's percentile points from the Survey of Personal Incomes.

Salary and income data is based on ONS and other official UK statistical sources. Figures are averages and may not reflect your individual circumstances.

Enter your total income for the year and choose whether it’s before or after tax. The calculator shows where it ranks among UK taxpayers, using HMRC’s percentile points.

What the figures cover

The figures are HMRC’s percentile points from the Survey of Personal Incomes, for the 2023 to 2024 tax year, the latest published.

  • Taxpayers only. HMRC’s table only covers people who have some Income Tax to pay. Most people with incomes below the Personal Allowance pay none, so they aren’t counted, and the rank is among taxpayers.
  • Total income, per person. Total income is all income subject to tax for the year: pay, pensions, self-employment profits, savings interest and so on. It’s one person’s income, not a household’s.
  • An older year. The survey year is a few years behind, and incomes have generally risen since, so a current income will tend to rank a little higher against these figures than against today’s.

Between two of HMRC’s percentile points the calculator places your income on a straight line between them and rounds down to a whole percentile, so it never shows a higher rank than the table supports. Above the 99th percentile point the table gives nothing finer than “top 1%”.

90th£67,400£54,300
95th£93,600£70,600
99th£207,000£134,000

For pay compared with other employees rather than all taxpayers, ONS’s Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings puts median gross pay for full-time employees at £40,911 a year (April 2026, provisional).

Income rank and wealth rank

This calculator ranks income: what you receive in a year. Wealth is what you own, such as savings, pensions and property, less what you owe. The two rankings can be far apart: someone near retirement may have a modest income but large pension savings, while a young worker on a high salary may have little wealth yet. For where your wealth ranks, see UK wealth percentiles.
