NHS Band 9 Salary UK 2026/27 — Take-Home Pay, Director Roles, and £100k Trap

NHS Band 9 salary 2026/27: £112,782–£129,783. Take-home pay, NHS pension, director roles, and the £100k personal allowance taper explained.

Salary and income data is based on ONS and other official UK statistical sources. Figures are averages and may not reflect your individual circumstances.

The NHS Band 9 salary in 2026/27 runs from £112,782 to £129,783 under Agenda for Change, following the 3.3% national pay award effective 1 April 2026. Band 9 is the most senior AfC band — director-level roles in nursing, AHPs, finance, and operations. At this salary level, the interaction between income tax, the £100,000 personal allowance taper, and NHS pension contributions becomes critical. Here is what Band 9 employees actually take home, and how to avoid paying more tax than necessary.

Note: there is currently no dedicated NHS Band 9 take-home-pay calculator page on Pocketwise — this guide contains the full take-home breakdown.

NHS Band 9 Salary 2026/27 at a Glance

Band 9 has three published pay points: entry, an intermediate point after 2 years, and the top of the scale after 5 years.

Take-Home Pay After Tax, NI, and NHS Pension

The entire Band 9 pay range sits in the top 12.5% NHS pension tier (pensionable pay £67,669 and above). NHS pension contributions reduce your adjusted net income for the personal allowance taper as well as your taxable pay.

SalaryPension (12.5%)Adjusted net income (taxable pay)Personal allowanceIncome taxNI (on gross)Monthly take-homeAnnual take-home

£129,783 (top)£16,223£113,560Tapered to £5,790£35,568£4,606£6,116£73,386

Note: income tax includes the personal allowance taper above £100,000 of adjusted net income. At Band 9 entry, the 12.5% pension deduction is large enough to keep adjusted net income just below £100,000, so the full personal allowance is preserved. From the intermediate point upward, some personal allowance is lost. These are illustrative figures — use the gov.uk income tax calculator or a qualified adviser for your exact circumstances, especially around the taper and any other adjustments to net income.

The £100,000 Personal Allowance Trap

This is the most important financial planning issue for Band 9 staff.

When your adjusted net income exceeds £100,000, HMRC withdraws your personal allowance (normally £12,570) at £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000. The personal allowance is fully withdrawn once adjusted net income reaches £125,140.

This means income in the £100,000–£125,140 band effectively carries a marginal tax rate of around 60% — the 40% higher rate plus the effective 20% surcharge from losing the personal allowance.

Example — Band 9 intermediate pay (£119,583):

  • Gross salary: £119,583
  • NHS pension contribution (12.5%): £14,948
  • Adjusted net income after pension: £104,635 — above the £100,000 threshold
  • Personal allowance reduced by £2,317 (half of the £4,635 above £100,000), leaving an effective allowance of £10,253
  • Because part of taxable income now falls above £100,000, this portion effectively carries the higher marginal rate until the taper is fully worked through

The pension solution: NHS pension contributions are deducted before adjusted net income is calculated for the personal allowance taper. At Band 9 entry pay, the standard 12.5% pension contribution is large enough to bring adjusted net income back under £100,000, preserving the full personal allowance. From the intermediate pay point upward, standard pension contributions alone are no longer enough — additional voluntary contributions (AVCs) can bring adjusted net income closer to, or back under, £100,000 for staff who want to avoid the taper entirely.

NHS Pension Value at Band 9

£112,782£14,098/year£26,729/year£40,827/year
£129,783£16,223/year£30,758/year£46,981/year

The total pension input at the top of Band 9 is nearly £47,000/year. In a defined benefit scheme this builds pensionable service directly — each year of full-time NHS service earns 1/54th of pensionable pay as annual pension in the 2015 NHS scheme. For a career-long NHS employee at Band 9, this is an exceptionally valuable benefit.
